Low-density polyethylene is a material that is increasingly sought after by all manner of industries. Its strengths are its great versatility and certain characteristics that ensure it can be used in a wide variety of ways. This accounts for its increasing presence in the manufacture of a wide range of components.
There is daily evidence of the way its use in everyday objects has become widespread. For example, it is found in freezer bags, in the cling film used to wrap food, etc.
What follows is a summary of its chief characteristics, setting out the sustainable advantages of the low-density polyethylene we work with at FORTAPS.
What is low-density polyethylene and what are its properties?
Low-density polyethylene, or LDPE, belongs to the family of olefinic polymers, and is composed of repeat units of ethylene.
Its characteristics differ from those of high-density polyethylene, also in high demand, and make it the preferred material for manufacturing bottles, bags, food packaging, etc.
It is a material with high thermal and chemical resistance, and is also highly flexible and mouldable. It is therefore easy to manipulate using the processes generally used with thermoplastics: injection moulding (such as the components in the FORTAPS catalogue) and extrusion.
In short, it is a shiny, malleable and resistant plastic. But to this definition it is crucial to add that it is the most-used plastic in the world and also, and very importantly, the most recycled.
Low-density polyethylene at FORTAPS
Low-density polyethylene is present in all FORTAPS output. This is the material we use in the injection process for our components, with the exception of the flanges and threaded inserts, where we use high-density polyethylene as it is more hard wearing.
Our work, involving the creation of our own moulds, requires a material that imparts flexibility to the injection process. But this material must also be highly resistant to both temperature and chemical contact. We have found the answer to these requirements in LDPE.
The sustainability advantages of FORTAPS polyethylene derive from two different but complementary factors.
First, there are the working processes. In this context, latest-generation machinery with minimal energy consumption underlines our philosophy of seeking continuous and sustainable growth.
Secondly, there is the material itself.
We explain this in more detail below.
Why highlight the sustainability of our LDPE?
There are three fundamental keys to understanding what we mean when we refer to the sustainability of this material within the framework of our production:
Virgin raw material
Our commitment to sustainability and environmentally-friendly innovation prompts us to look for extra quality in the material we use. This is why we start with virgin raw material in order to facilitate recycling.
It’s worth pointing out that all types of LDPE are recyclable. The containers made of this material are numerically classified with a 4 in the middle of a triangle made up of arrows.
While it is the responsibility of companies and individuals to manage their obligations appropriately in this regard, providing the necessary mechanisms to carry out recycling is also the responsibility of the competent authorities in the area.
Use of recycled polyethylene
The volume of injected parts at the FORTAPS plant results in the existence of a large amount of leftover material.
Within our manufacturing philosophy, geared towards increasingly green practices, we have incorporated the concept of the circular economy. This means that the surplus material is collected to be used again to produce other components.
Own recycling
It has already been mentioned above that LDPE is a fully-recyclable material. But the truth is that there are often certain inconveniences in this process that make it difficult.
Sometimes, people are the problem. Once the element made of polyethylene has been used, whether or not its useful life is over, we discard it in an inappropriate way. In other words, we fail to classify it correctly in the recycling bins or throw it away in the wrong place. Thus, the only thing attained is that the opportunity for sustainability offered by polyethylene is squandered, and it turns into a problem that grows with each passing day.
On other occasions, the responsibility falls at the door of governments. Sometimes they lack the mechanisms to process it, the waste is not correctly separated, or the processing facilities do not fulfil their role appropriately.
At FORTAPS we have decided to take control of managing the waste we generate. Thus, we take responsibility for recycling all leftover materials.
We work ceaselessly to ensure our output is ever more environmentally friendly. Our customers’ satisfaction and our commitment to sustainable growth are the twin engines that drive us forward. Contact us and tell us about your requirem

The use of recyclable plastic materials is an important contribution on the way to sustainability.
The current situation has many red flags, warning that a change in attitude is necessary. We must review our attitudes to consumption, sanitation and, of course, industrial production. With this last area, and whatever the product may be, pursuing a policy of zero waste means choosing the right materials.
As you will see, the composition and origin of the raw materials are basic factors necessary to complete the recycling process. This is why today, recyclable plastic materials are increasingly an option to consider.
On the other hand, it is also interesting to address other issues. One of them is the possibility of implementing the concept of the circular economy into industrial processes.
How do we manufacture?
There is no doubt that plastic is one of the main factors in pollution. That’s why choosing recyclable materials can be a powerful force for change.
In the business environment it is important to set objectives that are appropriate to the type of business, as well as its structure and procedures. On this basis, we are advocating for a greener philosophy in our company with three main points:
- The production process (the machinery).
- The materials we use (recyclable plastic materials).
- Recycling (keeping control over production waste). In this regard, using virgin materials makes it easier to reuse any remaining material.
The FORTAPS method
We work from our own designs, creating moulds for our items. And this, as you’ll see, is a great advantage when it comes to reducing environmental impact. This is the chronology of our production process:
- We make the design (from our extensive catalogue or for items on request).
- We create the exact moulds for the items The following table shows the number of the different types of steel used in the production of these parts (in non-calibrated steel).
Thus, participating in the entire development from the first moment gives us the freedom to make sustainability part of our plan.
We always meticulously choose the machinery: up-to-date, and equipped for the highest energy efficiency. In addition, our care extends to the materials: always non-toxic.
We are faithful to an environmentally friendly work philosophy. And, in fact, this is why we ruled out the use of PVC. Despite being very versatile and easy to use, chlorine forms part of this material, and is highly polluting (both in its production and usage). And it shouldn’t be forgotten that it’s particularly difficult to recycle. On the one hand, this is because the ingredients it contains contaminate the recycling process itself. And, on the other hand, because in itself, it’s more expensive.
Polyethylene is a much more eco friendly alternative, and therefore the choice we make at FORTAPS. And it is this that we transfer, in its two forms (high and low density) to the entire production process of any item, from inserts up to ferrules.
Recyclable plastic materials
We use two types of polyethylene:
- Low density (PELD): to inject into the items. Low density polyethylene is the most widely used plastic due to its properties (chemical and thermal resistance, as well as flexibility). It is also the most recycled.
- High density (HDPE): for the flanges and threads (which need more strength). It’s less flexible, but has the advantage of being highly robust.
In addition, anti-slip products are manufactured with thermoplastic rubber, a mixture between plastic and rubber, which has the advantages of both.
Manufacturong our parts with recyclable plastic materials makes it easier for us to do our own recycling. For this reason, we’re committed to the circular economy and the approach to the rules of the waste hierarchy. This means that, once an item is manufactured, that which doesn’t get used (or is surplus) is used for something else. And all this, within our own production chain.
The concept of waste management as an individual responsibility brings other benefits as well. On the one hand, a reduction in costs, as we are not using a third party service (collection, classification, recycling). On the other hand, the economic investment in new material is reduced, because it optimises usage of material.
At FORTAPS, we promise to ensure quality and the full satisfaction of our customers. And, in our roadmap to continuous improvement, sustainability is a primary objective. We have a complete catalogue and a lot of news.

Round tube ferrules are parts which can be adapted to different uses, and which offer many advantages for the pipe structures to which they are applied. In addition, they can be made in a variety of heights, diameters and shapes. They also allow different types of finishes, as well as the addition of a wide range of colours, as you can see in our catalogue.
At FORTAPS, we will explain a little more about these parts for you so that you understand better how they work.
What can ferrules do for you?
Ferrules are small parts, but which have important functions within their own context. To such an extent that, without them, the round tubes that house them often cannot properly perform their functions.
Do you want to know more about their applications? We’ll tell you all about it later.
Protection of surfaces
It’s easy to see that the normal use of furniture involves continuous dragging on or digging into the floors of our homes. Think about it, when you sit down to eat and move closer to the table or sit in an armchair… Isn’t it true that damage often occurs to the floor?
In addition, there are materials that are particularly sensitive to deterioration, for which a simple movement can cause damage that is very difficult to repair. This is the case with parquet, ceramic or carpeted floors.
Don’t fret, ferrules are suitable to protect your floors.
Noise neutralsiing elements
Very much in line with their use to protect surfaces, they also serve to insulate against the possibility of noise.
As we already pointed out, moving furniture can cause damage, but also other types of annoyance. Accompanying the dragging and the movements, there is often an unpleasant noise that use of the ferrules can cancel out.
For all these reasons, ferrules are items that can contribute significantly to maintaining and improving wellbeing in your home. But they are not solely limited to this setting.
The use of round tube ferrules is a very important option for the business establishments that are part of the HORECA chain. Hotels, restaurants and cafes are spaces which bring together a large number of people. And it is logical to try to seek the comfort of all customers and guests.
This comfort is achieved not only through proper care from the staff of these establishments. It is also advisable to take all the necessary measures in advance to create an atmosphere of comfort, which will make guests feel at home upon their arrival. In this scenario, avoiding noise and damage is a major issue.
Decorative purpose
Believe it or not, round tube ferrules can surprise you by having more applications.
In this example, and once again, also within the framework of your home, a hotel or in accommodation establishments. In both cases, in addition to comfort, aesthetics and a careful design are points that are appreciated. We all like to have a nice home, and as far as the hotel business is concerned, image is a fundamental ingredient for its success.
The contribution of the ferrules is much greater than it might seem given their size. Because one contributes to the aesthetics of a place in different ways, directly and indirectly.
Directly, they function as a finishing element or different types of furniture and structures, providing harmony to it as a whole. Indirectly, its uses as a preservation device for floor surfaces help to maintain its appearance.
Sealing (interior and exterior protection)
Like round tube endings, ferrules fulfil a valuable protective function, or as a barrier for containment and stoppage. On the one hand, they prevent any substance contained in the pipe from escaping from it. And, on the other hand, they cancel out the possibility of anything penetrating from the outside (dirt, humidity, etc.).
Safety materials
Its high clamping capacity provides extra strength to chairs, tables or other structures whose support they provide. That’s why ferrules can become your most appreciated items when looking for a way to create grip and firmness.
They’re a great help for the prevention of slips, trips and falls.
Round tube ferrules can be external or internal. And in both forms, they serve certain purposes. At FORTAPS, we can provide you with a complete service: consultation and product.
Contact us and we’ll advise you on everything you need. Besides, we always have news to tell you.
Entrust your ferrules to the experience of two generations dedicated to producing them. We’re waiting for you!

Vulcanized rubber is an extremely versatile material. It’s also very strong and durable.
It was discovered by chance, during the first half of the 19th century, by Charles Goodyear. He was working in his laboratory when raw rubber and sulphur dropped onto a stove and the heat produced the desired result.
This product with a long history and multiple applications in many fields owes its existence to chance.
What is vulcanized rubber?
Vulcanized rubber is a material obtained by applying a chemical process to natural rubber.
Natural rubber and vulcanized rubber
Natural rubber is a raw material with very interesting properties of its own. It is made by heating or chemically treating the sap of the rubber plant (better known as latex).
Some of its features can be very useful in industry, as it is elastic and adhesive. Even so, the discovery of the modification that transforms it into vulcanized rubber made it more valuable still. Its uses and applications have become widespread.
It meets millions of needs. It is used to make hoses, tyres, pipes or anti-slip safety elements (such as ferrules and tool handles) or internal joints in agricultural machinery.
What is vulcanization?
Vulcanization is the process by which vulcanized rubber is obtained. It is a chemical reaction made by adding sulphur (and other elements) to natural rubber. It is then heated to about 120º for a set time.
Depending on the time, temperature and the elements in the mixture, the material obtained will have a different appearance and very specific properties.
Vulcanized rubber is a particularly durable material, and therefore very suitable for certain actions and functions, as explained below.
Benefits of Vulcanized Rubber for Fortaps Products
Vulcanization makes natural rubber an element that gives extra strength to any product. At FORTAPS we can explain some properties that make it particularly suitable for certain functions.
It does not melt when heated
The mixture with sulphur and its subsequent heating causes the rubber to harden. Unlike other elements, heat converts rubber into a thermorigid material. When it comes into contact with a heat source, the rubber does not expand or stretch, but rather contracts or shrinks. Its inability to soften makes it particularly suitable for assisting the functions of products such as FORTAPS pipe caps.
Abrasion resistance
This is one of its most valuable features. It is the perfect material for making any of our ferrules. Its high wear resistance means that it withstands friction and shock and any type of abrasion better.
It does not dissolve in organic substances
When in contact with organic fluids such as (for example, oils), rubber usually responds by modifying its dimensions by contracting or spreading out, but it doesn’t dissolve. Some of its functional characteristics can also change. In any case, this does not mean that rubber loses its usefulness, but that success depends on finding the most suitable element for the kind of action it will be used for.
All these properties make it ideal to complete and improve FORTAPS products. Because of the functions that our articles are designed to fulfil, they need to be made of a strong material. They are structural components that function as points of attachment, adhesion, anti-slip, protection and seals.
We base our work on the quality of our materials and processes. This is how we achieve the longest duration and endurance, and why we choose the most suitable substances. For example, our Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) and High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) are perfect for parts that require greater strength due to their position or uses.
It is a value that we adapt to your needs. You can choose from a wide variety of products with the guarantee of our commitment to our customers, continuous improvement and sustainability. By choosing FORTAPS you enjoy all the advantages of vulcanized rubber, and can see all our new developments.
